The stroke is not controlled by pressure, which can be difficult to control when lettering, but merely narrows automatically as you progress. For example, if you begin lettering an S from the very tip of the top end, the stroke may be too thin by the time you curve all the way around to the finish. Start part of the way down, then carefully position your brush back at the top where you started, and stroke in the other direction.
